Western Kansas. I took a lot of trips out to Western Kansas as a kid. My grandma lived on a farm in Brewster, KS and we went out to visit her at least once a year, if not more. As a kid, I don't remember Western Kansas being exciting. Little did I know not far from where I spent many summers there was this...

Monument Rock Chalk Pyramids outside of Oakley, Kansas.

And this...

Castle Rock outside of Quinter, Kansas.

I had been wanting to visit both of these place for a long time. But since it's a bit of a drive, it couldn't just be a quick day trip. I decided this would be a great Spring Break Trip. We loaded up Friday afternoon and headed the 3-1/2 hours to Oakley, KS. Let me tell you, there is nothing like a Western Kansas sunset.

We stayed at Sleep Inn and Suites just right off of highway 70. It was a very family friendly hotel and we met quite a few great people in our short stay there. I love the friendliness of Midwest people!

Saturday morning we loaded up and first headed to the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center. It was interesting to learn about this man who has roots in Kansas.

This Bronze sculpture of Buffalo Bill is one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Art.

We then headed to Monument Rock.

All I can say is that Monument Rock is amazing. The fact that out in the middle of nowhere in Western Kansas, there are these towers of chalk that were formed many years ago because of a flood...it's pretty fascinating.

After exploring Monument rock we drove to Quinter, KS. We saw this sign and had to stop.

Ray's Old Fashioned Soda Shop is right in the middle of the local pharmacy/store. It's a fun little shop with some great old fashioned treats. The owners were so welcoming and I had a great time visiting with them. They also made us some super yummy treats.

They also told me that I was going to be blown away by Castle Rock. Little did I know how blown away I would be...

The drive to Castle Rock from Quinter was a bit of a long one. The majority of the drive was on dirt roads. But, believe me, it is worth it.

While Monument Rock is amazing, Castle Rock is indescribable. There is so much to see and explore, so many amazing sights.

These are both a must see in this wonderful state. I still can't believe that these amazing sites are located in Kansas. Makes me love this wonderful state even more.
