Castle Rock and Castle Rock Badlands. Who knew something so amazing like this could be in Kansas?

Castle Rock is by far my favorite place in Kansas. This natural wonder right in the middle of a Kansas prairie is a must-see, especially since it is one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas.

Castle Rock is located in Gove County and is about 12 miles south of I-70 between Quinter and Collyer, Kansas.

Castle Rock is named for the large limestone pillar that some say once resembled a castle. This pillar was once used as a landmark for travelers along the Butterfield Overland Dispatch.

Castle Rock and the Badlands immediately south of the Castle Rock pillar were formed from chalk that was deposited by a sea that once covered the area. (Hmmm....a big flood??) Over time Castle Rock and the surrounding Badlands were formed due to wind and water weathering the chalk.

The journey to Castle Rock isn't the easiest, as the road surrounding Castle Rock are very ragged and filled with deep ruts. Do not go when the roads are muddy and I would recommend taking a truck. But, once you make it there it is well worth the visit.

I took over 100 pictures, so it's hard for me to pick which ones to post. But, here are few to give you a glimpse of Castle Rock Badlands. Enjoy!

Tomorrow's post-another amazing Kansas sight that is similiar to this one. Monument Rock. Stay tuned!
